Be The Beauty Project for February 2012

DIAPER DRIVE!

It's no secret that there are families out there who are struggling to feed their children or keep a roof over their heads. Helping these people to keep from going hungry is a high priority for BE THE BEAUTY, and there are several months when we focus on food donations.

However, we often forget about other necessities--one of which is diapers and training pants.
There are moms who are faced everyday with the sad reality of using napkins and paper towels with tape because they have no way to buy diapers and training pants for their babies and toddlers.
The goal for February is to provide as many of these items as possible to the local shelters and food pantries. This month we will be collecting new, unopened packages of diapers and training pants of any brand, in any size.
And remember that when you bring in your donation, we give you a special Anastasia's Attic Be the Beauty coupon for 30% off any regular price item. This coupon never expires, and is our way of saying "Thank You" for making the world we all live in a more beautiful place.

"Be the Beauty" Project for January: Handwarmers for the Homeless!

During the month of January we are collecting handwarmers for the homeless!

During the cold winter months many homeless men, women, and children at left to brave the frigid temperatures with little to keep them warm.

Soul Food USA, the service-centered sister program to BE THE BEAUTY, will pass out donated handwarmers directly to the homeless when they do their weekly food drop.

And more than just warming someone's hands, your gift of kindness and compassion will warm their hearts and fuel their hope for a better future!

Handwarmers are available at Walmart, Smith's Marketplace, and general sporting stores.

Be the Beauty Project for October 2011

The warm summer days are coming to an end, and soon the cold winter months will be upon us. For many homeless men, women, and children, the freezing temperatures of winter are a hardship that can threaten their very survival.

This month our BE THE BEAUTY project is a Warmth Drive! We are collecting winter coats, gloves, hats, socks, blankets, and sleeping bags.
Items should be clean and in good repair. Children's items, and warm clothing in sizes 3x and up are particularly needed.
Items will be delivered to homeless men, women, and children during the winter months. Deliveries will be made by members of SOUL FOOD S.L.C., a local group which takes food and supplies to the homeless each week.

Food is one of the most basic needs, and organizations such as The Utah Food Bank help make sure that no one goes hungry.
For this month's Be the Beauty project, we are collecting non-perishable food items for the Utah Food Bank, to help fill their pantries for the coming winter. September is the Food Bank's slowest month for donations....let's see if we can change that!
Items that the Utah Food Pantry are in particular need of are: boxed meals, canned fruit (low sugar), canned stews & chili, canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese/pasta, peanut butter, and tuna fish.
The Utah Food Bank also has many wonderful opportunities for people who wish to volunteer their time. From sorting food and filling orders to office work and decorating food boxes...there are many wonderful ways to help! BE THE BEAUTY Project for August 2011

This month we are collecting boxes of children's bandaids to donate to the Fourth Street Clinic, which provides healthcare to the homeless.

Many of the homeless served by the Fourth Street Clinic are children who have very little in their lives of the wonder and magic in that all children deserve to experience.
By donating new, unopened boxes of themed children's bandaids, we are not only providing a much-need medical supply but are also providing a small element of fun and comfort to children who need it the most during a time of stress and fear.
Fourth Street Clinic is a nonprofit organization that works to end homelessness by providing comprehensive health care and support services to homeless Utahns.
For many of their patients, Fourth Street Clinic is their first and only chance at proper diagnosis and treatment. Good physical and mental health is the foundation for transitioning back into permanent housing.

Collecting women and children's clothing for the Domestic Violence Shelter.

It is hard to imagine the experiences of a woman and her children who sneak off in the middle of the night, often in their pajamas with only the clothes on their back, seeking safety in a domestic violence shelter
With so many other things to worry about, they should not have to be concerned about not having clothing and personal care items for themselves and their children.
This month we are supporting these brave women who find the courage to leave and stop the abuse for themselves and their children. We are collecting women's and children's clothing for the domestic violence shelters which provide a safe haven for endangered women and their children.
All different kinds of clothing are needed – pajamas, socks, shoes, jeans, work clothes, along with the same for all ages of children.
Clothing need no be new, but should be clean and in good repair.

Be the Beauty Project for March 2011

This month we lift loving hearts and our hands toward our four-footed fellow inhabitants of our planet! During March we will be collecting cans of dog and cat food for the Salt Lake County Animal Services.

The SLCAS provides shelter for all types of lost and abandoned pets, and has a wonderful adoption and foster program. Although Salt Lake County Animal Services is a county-funded organization, many of their outreach, rescue, and adoption programs are made possible through the generous donations of citizens.
In addition to caring for lost and abandoned animals and providing pet licensing, the Salt Lake City Animal Services has a rescue and foster programs that provides temporary homes to young kittens who are too young to be adopted. Foster parents are provided with all the necessary items for their foster-kittens--including food!

Duties include, but are not limited to, greeting and creating an unforgettable experience for our store guests, ringing up purchases, receiving and processing inventory, maintaining cleanliness and operations of the store, dressing up for store and Gardner Village Events, and, of course, sharing our famous Fairy Dust!

Our new team member will be scheduled 15-20 hours a week, comprised of 2-3 afternoon/evening shifts and Saturdays. Retail and computer experience are a plus, but are not necessarily required. All Gardner Village events are mandatory. Starting pay is determined by experience.

Working at Anastasia’s Attic is a wonderful opportunity to not just earn extra money, but to make a meaningful and positive difference in the lives of people every day. Queen Of Hearts Event

If you know anything about us at all at Anastasia's Attic you know at least 2 things...one...we love our customers...and two...we love to play dress up!! Being located in one of the most magical places in Utah "Gardner Village" gives us the chance to play dress up several times a year. The Village hosts several events each year that gives us a chance to show our customers how much we love and appreciate them and to dress up. Sometimes we are pirates,

Sometimes we are real witches...

And then of course we love to dress up like fairies...

One of these events is the Queen of Hearts. A time for us to show you our wonderful customers just how much we love and appreciate you. We want to pamper you and let you know that you truly are the queen of our hearts! This was only the second year but it was so much fun and we can see it growing to be one of our biggest and most fun events. The event is always held in February so make sure to mark your calenders for next year. And speaking of calenders....you can check the Gardner Village website for a listing of all the events through out the year. And while you are there you can sign up to get the email newsletter.

During the Queen of Hearts event all the stores have created wonderful ways to pamper you and say thank you for being a part of our Royal Family. There are great sales, treats, give-a-ways, prizes, coupons and more!! The Gathering Place is not to be missed. It host "The Chocolate Affair"! Beautiful chocolate fountains, and a plethora of yummy treats to dip in them, and several other chocolate items to satisfy your love for chocolate. Believe me your sweet tooth will be more than happy!

As the manager of Anastasia's Attic I am always amazed at how lucky I am to get to work in a store that is so magical if you listen closely you can hear the fairies laughing and playing among the racks of beautiful vintage inspired clothes,or conspiring to play little tricks on us. I get to wear magical fairy dust on my cheek each day, and work with the most kind, and loving women on the face of the earth.

Yes...I said celebrating!! Because these times are where so many of our most wonderful blessings stem from. Once the tears have dried and we have had time to heal we look back and see just what the lesson was. We grow and learn and many times say....if I had to do it all over again I would. Because so many of my most wonderful blessings have come wrapped in sandpaper!

Those of you who know Tara personally or who shop in our store know what an amazing woman she is.She is an international celebrity makeup artist who has worked with some of the world's top actors,singers,and athletes. Hi everyone this is Cricket and I am still in shock that it is now 2011...what happened to 2010....it was just a blur!

All of us at Anastasia's Attic would like to wish all of our family, friends and customers a very happy new year.

Each year at this time we each get the opportunity to look back and see the things we would like to do differently. You know...lose a few pounds, mend some fences,kick a bad habit, get organized...and the list goes on. A fresh start with anything just feels really good. And I myself need a fresh start with this blog. I got a little behind last year and then it just snowballed. But this year I am going to do my very best to keep it updated and let you know what fun and interesting things are going on at Anastasia's Attic.

January is always a fun time. We have a Facebook special that we post each day. We pick a different item each day and put it on sale for 50% off that day only. Each morning at 10:00 AM we change the item. What a fun way to start the year. Make sure to find us on Facebook and hit the like button so you will always know what fun things are going on. Hi this is Cricket, manager of Anastasia's Attic. A fun part of my job (one of many I might add) is meeting and getting to know some of our fabulous customers. I just met one and she sure is a QT, and really fun too. Her name is Jacqueline and she has a wonderful blog called Purple Chocolat Home. We met through the blogging world and then met again in person in the store.

This month we lift loving hearts and our hands toward our four-footed fellow inhabitants of our planet! During June we will be collecting cans of dog and cat food for the Salt Lake County Animal Services.

The SLCAS provides shelter for all types of lost and abandoned pets, and has a wonderful adoption and foster program. Although Salt Lake County Animal Services is a county-funded organization, many of their outreach, rescue, and adoption programs are made possible through the generous donations of citizens.

In addition to caring for lost and abandoned animals and providing pet licensing, the Salt Lake City Animal Services has a rescue and foster programs that provides temporary homes to young kittens who are too young to be adopted. Foster parents are provided with all the necessary items for their foster-kittens--including food!

May's Employee Of The Month is........Monica!

Many of you may not know Monica as she only works part time. But if you have ever met her you will never forget her. She looks like she should be on the front of a fashion magazine. And Monica is beautiful on the inside as well. She is funny, and smart and very kind.

I have heard from more than one customer how much they like her and how sweet she is. And I think our single male shoppers has doubled since she started working with us...LOL

She is a wonderful addition to our team and we are so glad to have her with us. And just in case you see a bit of family resemblance...she and Olivia are sisters.

Hi, this is Cricket Manager of Anastasia's Attic. Hope all of you are started to see signs of spring. Here is Utah it's still snowing....yeah...I know...crazy!!! I am sitting at my desk watching it snow and listening to the birds chirp. I guess that means there is still hope Spring will eventually get to this part of the world!

April has been a busy month at Anastasia's Attic. Two of our wonderful ladies were on a fantastic vacation in Brasil and another is working her other job for a few months taking time off from us. Not only did and still do miss our ladies but it also left a whole lot of schedule to fill.

That brings me to........ "Employee Of The Month"

Liz Edmiston!

I am not sure where to start. Liz is not only beautiful, sweet, kind and loving. She is also
a wonderful mother, wife, daughter and friend. Her talents are so many I can't number them.
She has a very generous and giving heart. She is always thinking of ways to reach out and help another.
She is fun to be around and has a very calming way about her. She is always ready to jump in and lend
a hand where ever she is needed.

Liz was such a BIG help this month. She worked whatever hours we asked of her, never complaining.
She even surprised me one day and came by and told me to leave for 2 hours and she would work
for me while letting me stay on the clock. It was just what I needed and gave me a couple of hours to regroup and get some errands done. If she would have given me a sack of diamonds it would not have
been more valuble.

We are so glad Liz is a part of our Anastasia's Attic family, and from what I have been hearing so are our customers. Look at that smile. Who wouldn't want to be greeted by that.

Thank you sooooo much Liz for always bringing the best part of you to share with us.
We love you!!

Be the Beauty Project for April!

Last month Anastasia's Attic launched our charity program, Be the Beauty, with a drive to collect hygiene kits for earthquake victims in Haiti and Chile. Thank you so much to all you who brought in your donations! These hygiene kits will make a great difference in the lives of people who have lost so much.

This month, our Be the Beauty project will add joy and beauty to the lives of children halfway across the world! We are excited to partner with One Heart Bulgaria, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Bulgarian orphans.

Throughout the month of April, we will be collecting art supplies for the children in these orphanages. Examples of needed supplies are: crayons, children's scissors, washable markers, glue sticks and clear tape. (Please no paints.) You may bring your donations to Anastasia's Attic anytime during operating hours (Mon-Thur 10-6, Fri-Sat 10-8, Closed Sunday.)

OMGosh...it is starting to feel like spring.....well, at least some days it does. The ducks at Gardner Village are greeting me early each morning as I open the store. The robins are building nests and digging for worms trying to fatten themselves up for feeding all the little babies to come. Oh how I love my job!!

As manager of Anastasia's Attic I have the pleasure of doing so many really fun and uplifting things each day. One of my favorites is interacting with my co-workers. We have the best group of women in the world working there. And each month I get to pick my choice for "Employee Of The Month". Picking is not the hard part...picking just one is!!

This month however my choice is....... Olivia!

If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting her, you know that everything I am about to say is true.
Her smile brightens up the room. She is as smart as she is beautiful and WOW, is she beautiful! She looks like a little china doll and I have nick named her "Little Bit". Customers love her and she loves them in return. She has a heart of gold and is always looking for ways to give service to others in need.
She can always make me laugh. And I am always so happy to see her walk through the door to start her shift. She gives 100% to her family, friends, work and community.

We are so happy to have her as a part of our Anastasia's Attic family.

Each month my pick gets a small token of appreciation that I feel fits them. And knowing that Olivia loves the dresses at Target, I decided to give her a $25.00 gift certificate. We have started something new at Anastasia's Attic. Managers pick for Employee of the month. As Manager of Anastasia's Attic I work very closely with the ladies who work there. We are all very close and love to tease each other and have a little fun. We are all different ages and at different stages of our lives ( I'm the old one...LOL) But the one thing that we do share is our love for Anastasia's Attic. I know how lucky I am to have the best team working with me in the magical place we call our home away from home.

You can only imagine how hard it was to pick one and only one. But I just reminded myself that each month I will get to pick a different wonderful lady to be employee of the month. And let her know how much I love and appreciate her.

Sooooooo February picks is.....April!!

As a few of you may know earlier this month I was very sick and had to take a few days off from work. April stepped right in and took over. She made schedule changes, took care of phone calls, deliveries, and all kinds of assorted other things that I usually do. I didn't have to worry for one minute that things wouldn't be taken care of. She called to check up on me, asked what more she could do for me personally or the store. It was so nice to be able to rest and do as the doctors said.

Moonlight Madness...the Fairy Fete!

Life Is Always Changing

At Anastasia's Attic we are like a big family. And like all families we sometimes have a family member move away or have to leave the nest for one reason or another. This month as been bitter sweet as we have one leave the nest but yet another return!

We will miss Heather as she and her new husband Chris and their little one to be go about making their new life together. We wish her a happy life filled with only good things.Get a lot of sleep now mommy to be because soon there will not be any...LOL.

On the other hand....we are lucky enough to have one of our little chicks come back to the nest. Brit worked at Anastasia's Attic for over two years when she left to go to college down south. She is home for the summer and back with us and we could not be happier. And even though we know the summer will speed by and she will once again have to leave us....we hope she knows we will always be here to welcome her back ANY TIME with open arms. Welcome Home Britt...we missed you!!

The Fairy Trap Dress

The Legend of the Fairy Trap

Legend has it that fairies find it near impossible to resist the lure of beautiful objects, especially those made by kind hands and a pure heart. Many years ago, a small girl with just such a heart discovered, quite by accident, the way to entice fairies into her bedroom night after night, bringing with them their magic and joy!

This young child was not born into riches of the usual sense--her family did not have much in the way of material possessions and worldly prizes, and although they always had enough to eat and a roof to sleep under, there was not money for extravagant toys and playthings. Fortune had smiled on this girl in quite a different manner, however; she was graced with the most vivid of imaginations, and the ability to find exquisite joy in simple beauty. A scrap of lace or ribbon retrieved from beneath her mother's sewing table was, in her mind, a piece of the finest raiment. Tiny blossoms picked from the patch of wildflowers growing near the side of the road were, to her, flowers from the Queen's garden! And a piece of broken jewelry or a small seed pearl found amongst the rocks and pebbles of an empty lot were the greatest of riches!

Once day while playing outside among the trees and bushes with her found treasures, and while lost in thoughts of beauty and magic, the small girl fashioned a tiny dress from her bits of ribbon and lace, her prized wildflower blossoms, and her beloved jewels. When it was completed, she was so enthralled with it's loveliness that she thought to herself, "Surely this is a magical thing--even the fairies themselves would love to wear such a dress," and she ran inside to hang it up in her bedroom.

That night, after the little girl had fallen into a deep and peaceful sleep, something truly extraordinary happened. The three fairies who inhabited her yard had secretly been watching her that day as she transformed her small trove of treasures into the beautiful miniature dress. They had peered in through her bedroom window as she hung her prized creation from the edge of a lamp. And now that she was safely asleep, they sprang into action. Since no mortal eye was was awake to witness their clandestine activities, the fairies used their magic to slip quickly and effortlessly through the closed window as if it were only air. In a mere moment they were across the room to the coveted little dress, and had in their tiny fairy hands. Quickly as they came, they were back at the window to depart with their prize. But as the fairies passed once again through the glass of the window, the beautiful dress was forced from their hands and fell to the ground inside the room.

Dazed and a little befuddled, the three fairies darted back through the window into the room, and again tried to carry the little dress back out with them through the glass. Yet once again the fairies found themselves outside the window, staring in at the dress on the bedroom floor. And then the realization came over them. The little dress of childhood treasures had been made by human hands---there was no fairy magic in it, and so it could not pass through the solid matter of the window glass as the fairies could!

By this time, however, the fairies were themselves so deeply enchanted by the little humans girl's creation, that they could not bear to fly off into the night without it. And so they stayed. Back into the room they came, and passed the hours of the night taking turns with the tiny dress, flying around in it and dancing through the air above the little girl's very head, until finally the suns' first rays poured like ribbons of gold into the bedroom. When the fairies realized the girl would soon wake up, they quickly hung the dress back up where they had first found it, and whizzed out the window into the wooded yard. When the little girl awoke moments later, her head was swimming the the fuzzy memories of the most magical dreams--dreams full of the flitting of tiny, glittery wings, and of silvery peals of laughter that was almost silent, and yet filled the whole room.

That evening, as soon as the little girl had slipped once more into the kingdom of dreams, the three fairies returned. They kept the hours of the night as they had done before, dancing in the little dress, and filling the little girl's dreams with the most lovely of sounds and images. Night after night they returned to play and dance and sing in the dress, each morning hanging it carefully where the little girl had put it that first day.

And so the legend goes, that if you find a small, lovely dress--fashioned from little bits of this and that--and you hang it in your bedroom where it can be seen from outside your window, the fairies will come. Night after night, they will come. They will come in the silence as you sleep, and dance in the air above your head wearing the dress they cannot take, for it was made with the magic of the human heart--which is a different thing from the magic of the fairies. The fairies can fly through the air on their wings of gauze and glitter, and they can pass without effort through that which we cannot. But mortal magic--the magic that most humans don't even know about-- is this; that through what we create with kind hands and pure hearts, we can draw to ourselves beauty and wonder that is beyond our imaginations!

For those of you who know and love Brie and her sister Brit who both used to work at Anastasia's Attic....you will love this.

We were all so sad when they left...Brit off to college and Brie getting married and finished hair school and went on to do what she loves...styling hair. But we try and keep in touch the best we can. All of us Anastasia's Attic miss them so much an love when they stop by for a visit. Well....today Brie and her husband Mike stopped by to tell us their good news. In August they will be adding a cute little baby girl to their family. WE ARE ALL SO EXCITED FOR THEM!! WE love you guys and can't wait to get to hold your sweet baby girl!

I love those girls like my own. They are the cutest, sweetest girls in the world.

Spider Woman Saves The Day!!

Hi I'm Cricket and I am the manager of Anastasia's Attic. Part of my job is to open the store each morning Monday-Friday. Putting out all of our wonderful porch items is also something I do. WEll......Monday morning as I was taking things out to the porch I saw a spider crawling across the floor in the red room....eeewwww Yuck!
I am not one to just go around killing things but I thought it probably wouldn't please our customers to come in and see it. Sooooo...I went over and stepped on it.And as I walked away it started to move again, feeling bad that I had wounded it I wanted to put it out of it's misery so yes...I stepped on it again and decided to get a paper towel and pick it up. But as I started to walk away it started to move AGAIN!

Now I'm thinking WOW...that is some spider! and I step on it again and it moves again and by this point I am thinking I am going to have to call Animal Control or one of those guys you see on Animal Planet that wrangle dangerous Critters and relocates them to a more natural habitat. This Spider just won't die!!

Now I am jumping on it with both feet and really scared that this is some kind of mutant spider with super powers and at any moment it will tire of me trying to kill it and will knock me across the room. ,BUT..I'm not a quitter!! So I take a chance and bend down to get a closer look at this amazing spider with nine lives and super powers. And found out that the Spider From Outer Darkness was actually....drum roll please...........Lint....yes... I said LINT! And it was probably from my own black sweater I was wearing.

Guess no matter how much I try to ignore it...age has taken over and my eyes are shot! Looks like I better make a trip to the eye doctor and get some new glasses.

Life is not fun at all if you can't laugh at yourself....and yes ...you can laugh at me too. But just call me Spider Woman when you do it!!

Moonlight Madness!

Each year we have a Moonlight Madness sale in September where we dress like Pirates. And another one in November where we dress like Fairies. We stay open until midnight and have so much fun. I didn't dress up this time as I was sick with a fever and freezing all night. But the other ladies look fantastic. Tara is so convincing as a Fairy...and sooo beautiful!

Yes, she is a real life fairy, and if you don't believe me look at her ears.

Witches Night Out!

Each year the weekend before Halloween we have what is called Witche's Night Out. It's two nights filled with fun, food, friendship, great sales and witches of every kind. There are good witches, mean witches, purple witches and green witches. Tall witches and small witches. Skinny witches, plump witches, witches in feathers and witches in leather.We had such a good time getting to talk with them and hang out for the night. We can't wait for next year. The costumes get better and better.
